For the first time, this year's Alpaca Fest included a craft competition jointly organised by the Hand Spinners and Weavers Guild and Victorian Western Region.
Competition judge Joan Dever awarded the prizes to:
Hat: Susan Mitchell - 1st
Elaine Brook - runner up
Scarf: Marie Williams - 1st
Elaine Brook - runner up
Joan Dever said the overall quality of the work was very pleasing, with a good variation of natural and dyed colours.
“Spinning was of varied thickness from fine to about 12 ply and some spinning needed more attention to evenness of singles and plying,” she said.
The winners in each section received a cheque for $50 and the runners up received a prize of $20.
VWR President Russell Dawe said he was delighted with the response to the craft competition.
“We hope to expand it next year by adding classes where entrants use suri fleece, as members of the Guild had not used it before but were keen to try it out,” he said.
The 2008 Sydney Easter Royal Show proved a happy hunting ground for several Western Victorian studs.
The Clarks of Kurrawa Alpaca Stud at Bellbrae took out the Supreme Champion Suri award with Kurrawa Just In Time, a product of their successful embryo transplant program.
Judge Jill MacLeod from Albuquerque , Canada , was so impressed with Kurrawa Just In Time that she said she would be judging all other suris against the standard he set.
"My opinion right now with suris is that Australia sets the world standard," Ms MacLeod said. "
The Clark family also took out the prestigious suri sire's progeny class with offspring sired by Kurrawa Akira.
Ambleside Alpaca Stud at Berrybank won second place in the 18 to 24 months white suri male class with Ambleside Andean Maestro and third in the 12 to under 18 months fawn suri female class with Ambleside Vanilla Spice.
In the huacaya section, the O'Connor family's Combe Hill Sirocco won first place in the Intermediate Medium – Dark Fawn Male class before going on to take out the Intermediate Champion Male award against tough competition. This followed his triumph at the recent Berwick Show where he took out the Supreme Championship.
Blaka Galahad, bred by Liz and Russell Dawe of Apollo Bay , was first in the Intermediate Black Male class. His fleece also won a blue ribbon and champion black fleece at the AAA's recent international fleece show.
Drysdale breeders Carolyn and Allan Jinks also achieved success at the international fleece show with Benleigh Sancho's fleece taking out the championship in the 12 to 18 months age group in the huacaya section.
Kurrawa Alpaca Stud enjoyed outstanding success in the suri fleece classes, with their fleeces winning champion and reserve champion in the 18 to 30 months age group. Kurrawa Just Cruising ET's fleece went on to win the suri supreme championship.
Congratulations everyone!
